October – World Menopause Month

Did you know October is World Menopause Month? Ok, I know the month is almost over, but I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to bring awareness to  the many options available to support Women’s health and well-being as they make the inevitable transition into menopause.

Most women reach menopause when they’re around the age of 50, but the lead up to this can take up to 10 years – this is known as perimenopause. Symptoms of menopause include memory loss, vaginal dryness, hot flushes and headaches – but there are many other symptoms and every women will experience it differently.

The good news is that acupuncture and Herbal Medicine can help alleviate menopausal symptoms!  One study found that 5 weeks of acupuncture reduced hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances & emotional problems.  Acupuncture can help treat the hormonal imbalance causing heat to rise in the body, the primary cause of hot flashes. Along with acupuncture, I advise patients to eat a healthy diet and stay hydrated.

Mood or Emotional changes?

With all of the hormonal changes our bodies experience with menopause, its no wonder we experience some mood changes.  Researchers in a 2013 study found that acupuncture can alter neurotransmitters in the brain to alleviate conditions such as anxiety and nervousness, improving overall mood.

Can’t Sleep?

Along with hot flashes, sleep issues are one of the biggest reasons women come to see me. In addition to acupuncture, I frequently recommend herbal formulas that help calm the mind.  And many patients find that a warm epsom salt footpath helps to relax the body before bedtime.

These are just a few of the ways we address menopausal symptoms with acupuncture, herbal medicine and time-tested remedies. If you need support in your journey, we would love to help.  Give us a call!
